The Enigma That Is Unlucky Morpheus

First of all let me say that if you have never heard violin in a heavy metal song then you have really got to give these guys a listen! Unlucky Morpheus will transport you into a whole new level of symphonic speed metal that the band describes as "Technical Melodic Speed Metal".

Unlucky Morpheus formed in 2008 and in the beginning they were a cover band, but in recent years they expanded their activities to include doujin music of Touhou Project, and then finally they moved on to making their own original songs.
Let's face it, Here in the U.S. you can't knock a good cover band, but it's not like you get really excited about going to go and see one. So then, it's hard for us to see the appeal here. Let me help you with that.

Expect The Unexpected

So if they write their own material and still play cover music are they still a cover band? And if so, do other cover bands still consider them a cover band? At some point in my pondering I had to concede that in the end it might not really matter that much because this band packs some serious talent and potential.

With members like Shiren (紫煉) (formerly in BabyMetal's Kami band), Tenge Fuyuki (天外冬黄) (formerly the vocalist of DOLL$BOXX and Light Bringer), Jill (formerly of Rose Noire
Hollow Mellow), Fumiya (formly of Galneryus, ICARUS'CRY, grace period, Femme Fatale, THOUSAND EYES and Undead Corporation), Ogawa Hiroyuki (小川洋行) (also performing in QUADRATUM, TRICK BOX and THE CHARM PARK), and Jinya (仁耶)( also performing in Undead Corporation) you begin to get the idea that this is a band like no other.

When a new fan of metal on Reddit asked what genre is Unlucky Morpheus another fan answered back:

"They are basically power metal but they are inspired by classical composers. So there are aspects of their music you could call 'symphonic'. Another word you will hear used to describe them is 'neoclassical'."

The band themselves describes themselves as "Technical Melodic Speed Metal". The combination of Progressive and Power metal, technical arrangements which feature both female and male vocals, and a tasteful nod to classical music makes the band a force to be reckoned with.

Fun Facts:
The nickname for the band "ankimo (あん肝)" was decided first, and the full name "Unlucky Morpheus" was chosen later because it sounds like the nickname. Ankimo is steamed monkfish liver which is considered a delicacy in Japan.

Unlucky Morpheus members publish a subscription magazine "ANKIMO Magazine" that updates articles on a daily basis instead of having an official website.
