  • So have you ever heard of the Magnolia Factory? (こぶしファクトリー, Kobushi Factory)?

    Magnolia Factory

Until just recently I had only heard the name, and I knew that they were under H!P. But now, I see they include one of the most impressive new vocalists in Juice=Juice, Rei Inoue! Now that I know the story involves an artist I’m very impressed with, I find myself very interested in their story, so I will share it with you now. The “Magnolia Factory” was a brand new idol group, beginning in January and February of 2015.

Formed by Hello! Project, its original members were Rio Fujii, Ayaka Hirose, Minami Nomura, , Ayano Hamaura, Natsumi Taguchi, Sakurako Wada, and Rei Inoue.

While writing this blog, I’ve found many of the videos named Fist Factory. And I didn’t see this in any of my research, but when I started playing around with the translator, I found that “Kobushi” translates to “Magnolia” in English. But it also translates to “fist”, this is more a complication with translation than anything to do with Japanese culture I believe.

In regards to the name Magnolia Factory, I had the pleasure once of owning a Magnolia tree in the front yard of my Victorian mansion In the Midwest. Not knowing anything about it, or trees as it were. I just thought it was a throwback to the raging 1920s when it was planted, a fashion statement of the era. Now looking back on it years later, I realize that with the Magnolia tree in the front yard, and a Ginkgo Biloba tree in the backyard, there was a serious Japanese influence on the horticulture of that place, and it did start me questioning, “Why you would need a factory for magnolias, since they grow on trees?”

As it turns out the wood is used for making boxes and crates, so that is one possibility for a factory. Also the flowers are edible and considered delicious, so a factory that Pickles the blossoms( yes, they do that ) would be another type of Magnolia factory. I guess one could go on with a couple more ideas, but back to the music!

This Idol-unit was officially given the name “Magnolia Factory” on February 25th, 2015. A couple weeks later, it was announced that the leader and sub-leader would be Ayaka Hirose and Rio Fujii respectively. I was under the impression that leaders of groups where determined age, as in the oldest would naturally be the leader. But I can understand the importance of making it an official announcement.

The official Music video features the girls of Magnolia Factory, in a classroom setting, very seriously playing rock, paper, scissors to start a game of hide & seek. All very professionally shot and edited together as an action sequence with what sounds to me like a hair metal Soundtrack?! This is definitely not the standard “bubble gum pop” sound I’ve grown to expect(and not appreciate) from the female artists here in America!

Later that year. November 20th to be exact, it was announced that they won a Newcomer Award at the 57th Japan Record Awards. They were presented with their award and were later announced as the winners of the Best Newcomer Award in a ceremony that December.Magnolia/Kobushi Factory released their second single, on February 17, 2016,こぶしファクトリ

“Sakura Night Fever / Chotto Guchoku ni! Chototsumōshin / Osu! Kobushi Tamashī”

Fist Factory “Doskoi! Kenkyo ni Daitan /Dosukoi! Humble but Bold”

“Samba! Kobushi Janeiro / Bacchikoi Seishun! / Ora wa Ninkimono

Then on July 27, 2016 the next video was released their third single was released. This video included Samba dancers and made many references to the Olympics and spoke about the importance of motivation in athletics, as in life. It sure makes you wanna dance!

The release of their second and third singles was followed by the release of their first studio album on November 30,”Kobushi Sono Ichi”.

I’ve been told, many times in the past that “The only thing constant is change.”, that certainly seems to be the case in the Japanese music industry. things seem to change often, and very fast, in the case of Magnolia Factory, change starts here with the subleader, Rio Fujii announcing she would graduate from the group at the end of the H!P 2017 Summer concert tour to focus on becoming a nurse or a teacher. This plan was later revised when Rio Fujii’s contract was terminated on July 6 due to her lack of compliance with the rules.

Allow me to take a moment here to say this, that is all the information I have, and I’m not trying to find any more information. For those that are truly curious, I’m sure it’s available somewhere, but I’m going to leave it at that. Let’s focus on the positive aspects!

Wri”Shalala! Yareru hazu sa/ ee JA nai ka ninja nai ka”, Magnolia Factory’s fourth single, was released on June 14,2017. This was. A happy, upbeat song. With motivational lyrics. And one spot where ReiRei’s solo vocal really shines through!

Unfortunately”, Hello! Project announced that Rena Ogawa would take a hiatus from the group’s activities due to anxiety neurosis. This announcement came on July 13,2017 on September 6, it was announced that Ogawa had graduated from Magnolia Factory and Hello! Project after her condition failed to improve. I shared this video below just to show that by September of 2018, she seemed to be doing well, at this performance. I really wish it got more views. Hopefully she continues to do well in the future. She has a great voice, I would love to hear more recordings from her!

Later in the year, on December 6, 2017, Hello! Project announced that Natsumi Taguchi would no longer be part of the group, for not complying with the rules and as a result, her contract was terminated.

All of this must have made for a very difficult year. While learning about Magnolia/Kobushi Factory, I thought it was unfortunate they only lasted for eight singles. Now, the more I look into it, I believe we were fortunate that they lasted long enough to put out even four singles! With a year like 2017 that they had, it could have easily been the downfall of the group, What a rough ride!

Perhaps the rough year is one reason why their next single didn’t come out until March 28th, 2018, when the group released their fifth single, “Kore Kara da! / Ashita Tenki ni Naare”. They only released two singles in 2018, on August 8, they released their sixth single “Kitto Watashi wa / Naseba Naru”. While both of these are great songs. I was unable to locate a music video for either one! After having such video success, no video for two singles in a row. would be devastating!

Even though that probably was a hard time for them, the singles were still excellent songs, as is everything I’ve heard from them, with really spectacular music! This video, “Haru Urara-Beautiful Spring” is a great example. I don’t think it was released as a single. But it came out a week before their seventh single, so it must be on the album?

Seventh single, “Oh No Ōnō / Haru Urara”

    Fist Factory “Haru Urara-Beautiful Spring”

Then later that year, on October 2, Magnolia Factory released their second studio album, “Kobushi Dai Ni Maku”!On March 4, 2020.

Now for the part I don’t like. It seems this group was more like a bus ride, whereas other groups would compare better to a relay race.

The group released their eighth and final single, on March 4, 2020,, “Seishun no Hana / Start Line” The group disbanded on March 30 with a concert at Tokyo Dome City Hall. Exactly one week after I was laid off due to the pandemic. I’m sure the pandemic played a role in terminating their activities. As it did for so many people.

I found I still have just as many questions now as I did when I started this blog, perhaps more. Just different ones! I’d have to say that the group was a success when their official videos get from 600,000 to well over 1,000,000 views almost regularly. My focus here of course, was Rei INoue! She is a favorite artist in Juice=Juice for a lot of people. Seeing as how I’ve learned so much about Magnolia factory in writing and researching this, I’m certainly going to track down the rest of the members in the near future!

while searching for this 8th and final single on YouTube. I passed a bunch of reaction videos and in every single one, the reactors were crying hard, some even put teardrop emojis on the cover photos of their video’s! There is a seriously devoted fan base here. Hopefully many Of these songs will be performed in future live H!P events!

  • Shred RACERS !

Shred RACERS -from YOUNG GUITAR !

Shred RACERS Online is an event that was produced by Young Guitar Magazine & Nippon Cultural Broadcasting, to showcase technical guitarists.

What is a Shred RACER? You might wonder.

knowing that you’re looking at music-oriented information, you can more than likely guess this one correctly. Primarily, the term applies to the specific people that were featured on the show. I would guess that it inclusive of anyone who can play at the same level, The term “shredding” isn’t new in the music world but when you put “RACER” behind it, I believe that to be trademarked by Young guitar.

Shred RACERS is a group of performances online, organized and produced by Young guitar magazine. The three performances Feature some of the best hard rock/metal musicians active in the Japanese music industry. So then, the term Shred RACER would refer to the guitarists playing in these shows, although it may also include the violinist. For someone to “shred” on their instrument, it seems to me, a phrase best reserved for string instruments, that are held and plucked, picked, or bowed.

I feel like each player brought their best to the show! While I was not able to watch the broadcasts live the videos are available on Youtube, and there is a Facebook page as well.

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6kORN1F0oKTIAjjMpiv0Pw

    https://www.facebook.com/ShredRACER

How generous, and genius it was for Young Guitar to do this! I’m equally grateful to the musicians who participated, their playing abilities impress me so much!

I believe this is the best response to the pandemic and its effects on our cultures. At a time when nobody was touring, having these shows enabled musicians who would be out there touring to stay in the spotlights and the minds of their fans. The show gives a bit of relief we all can use while going through this pandemic. Hopefully, this series will continue, at this time the show has already been expanded to include special interviews with some of the artists. Additionally, the magazine does have another video series. I would rank Young Guitar among the best of music magazines!

    https://youtu.be/NoZQIZr_awA

For every artist. that was on the show Shred RACERS that I would call my favorite there are probably two favorites that were not on the show. I think that helps make it a good mix. Seeing some of my favorite artists is why I tune in, but seeing “new” artists who I’m not that familiar with or “old” artists(for example Iron Bunny) He may not be old, but I did hear of him after the demise of his group. This is something that happens to me often as I wasn’t interested in this genre before 2018. Or more precisely, I never heard of it. Some of my favorites would be Saki. From Cyntia, and of course, The other Saki from Nemophila & Mary’s Blood! She’s just so amazing on guitar. And then. Mayu! The singer of Nemophila is a wonderful lead singer! Fuki, lead vocalist for Unlucky Morpheus and Doll$boxx and,….. all the other stuff she does. I would hate to have to choose just one! Some of the artists, I’ve heard of them, for instance. I’ve seen Yuki from D Drive. on a guitar tutorial video one time, maybe twice and that was all I saw of her, so I knew who I was looking at, but it was nice to see her rocking a performance! Yui is the guitarist from Cyntia I was not familiar with her at all! This show and the interview video helps me get more focused on what she can do!

The links below are the YouTube channel and the official website. Both take you to all of the videos. On the official website, there are some excellent photographs of the artists. I highly recommend liking and subscribing. I think this is some great music, and it is certainly a lot of fun to watch the videos!

Haruka Kudō (工藤遥, Kudō Haruka, born October 27, 1999) is a Japanese actress and Graduate member of the J-pop/Idol unit Morning Musume.

Kudo Haruka is for me one of the more memorable members of Morning Musume. She brought Her own unique style to the group.

    工藤遥, Kudō Haruka

Except for the fact that it wasn’t her! And This is part of why the images on this page are so large! So that you can get a real good look at Kudo Haruka, apparently there was someone. Who has almost the same name? And is even more famous, Arguably, she also looks very similar. That’s what really brought my attention to this alumnus of Morning musume. To me, she was there during the best era of them all, “The Platinum Era”, my Interest in my Morning Musume. really is focused on the era from Takahashi Ai through to present day, Kudo Haruka was in most of that!

On March 27, 2010, at the Hello!Project Yokohama Gold! concert, Kudō was introduced as a new member of Hello!Pro Egg.[2] She debuted in concert on May 1, 2010, at the Hello!Project presents: Hello Fest in Odaiba Gurume Park festival.[2] On September 29, 2011, at a concert at Nippon Budokan, which was part of Morning Musume Concert Tour 2011 Aki Ai Believe: Takahashi Ai Sotsugyō Kinen Special, it was announced that Kudō had passed the auditions alongside three other girls: Haruna Iikubo, Ayumi Ishida and Masaki Satō, and would all be joining Morning Musume. Kudō is the youngest member in history to join Morning Musume, at 11 years and 11 months.

one of my favorite videos featuring Haruka Kudo is sexy cat speech, in that video she played one of the three troublemakers. And it looks like they all had a lot of fun with it!

As my discovery of Morning Musume didn’t really begin until early in 2020, Kudo Haruka had already moved on the next chapter of her career, as a television actress! In February 2018, Kudō made her acting debut as action hero, in a kids show called, “Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger”, as Lupin Yellow! In the video to the right. Almost two years later, Kudo Haruka’s graduation was brought to my attention. By accident when I saw posts of( what I thought was) her new album.

工藤遥, Kudō Haruka. One of the fun things about writing A blog is you learn more as you’re writing them, for instance, I just found out that Haruka kudo was acting, along with singing and dancing for Morning Musume. They also did theatrical plays together!
In the videos below, you can see her performing with my favorite Avenger, Sayashi Riho, as well as the recently graduated Sato Masaki !

  • LAST IN MY CULT

Horror pop style with Hard rock/Thrash punk music !

With a name like this, You just can’t be ignored. This four word phrase is so unique and unusual, yet it easily conveys a specific juxtaposition, as obviously, if you are the last in your cult, then you no longer have said cult!
The stylized text, with the anarchy symbol replacing the letter “a”, and the letter “i”, dotted with an x ,are the icing on the cake of this marketing genius !
With all that said, we both know none of it matters without the right music ! this would never work as the name of a mainstream pop group, the name promises something edgy. This blog post exists because I think this alt-idol unit delivers! and I hope you give them a listen !

Well I started this blog post to express my interest in this “new’ group I had just discovered (YouTube algorithm). Unfortunately, they disbanded back in April of 2021, after only two years.

  • A blog post

Cyntia started as a 4- girl J-Metal band that formed in Tokyo in the fall of 2011, initially created by YUI and KANOKO, who co-starred in a music video of LIV MOON.

In the same year, AIRI and AYANO joined and started producing music centered on YUI and AYANO. Finally, after more than a year of auditions in November, SAKI joined, and CYNTIA became a five-member group.

Their debut single, “Run to the Future,” was released in April 2012 and won 28th place in the Oricon daily single ranking. After that, AIRI withdrew due to poor physical condition. AZU ( LAZYgunsBRISKY) was chosen as the support bassist.

Unfortunately, Airi officially left the group in June, but the band released their first album, Endless World, in September. Azu became a full member in November.

In January 2013, Cyntia played as a backing band at KARA’s Tokyo Dome performance. In March of the same year, the album ” Lady Made ” was distributed on iTunes in 119 countries, making a significant global debut. In addition, Mari Hamada’s hit song ” Return to Myself ” was covered and released as the first major single in July.
Cyntia was believed to have been the first act from the Girls Metal Band Boom to have signed to a major record label when they joined Victor Entertainment in 2013.
Cyntia was voted 2013’s best new artist by readers of heavy metal magazine Burrn!.
Although I cannot find any YouTube video from that year, Cyntia performed at that year’s Naon no Yaon female-only rock festival. Later that year, they opened for American metal band Kamelot on their Japanese tour.
After this, Cyntia found much success with soundtrack or theme music. Their song “Senko Strings” was used as the fourth ending theme song to Saint Seiya Omega and released as a single in January 2014. Following that, their song “Kiss Kiss Kiss” was used as the theme song of the 2014 Itazura na Kiss 2 ~Love in Okinawa television drama special

“Kiss Kiss Kiss” was released as a single in January 2015. a month later, “Akatsuki no Hana” was used as the second opening theme of the Yona of the Dawn anime adaptation. Then in February, The album “Woman” was released with more of a soft, pop-rock sound. In April 2015, KANOKO, the leader and drummer, withdrew, for what reason I do not know.
Cynthia has Since transitioned to a four-person band, Members: Yui; Ayano; Saki; Azu. In
The label was transferred from Victor Entertainment to Village Again Association, in October 2016, this is the label Aldious and Rami belonged to.
Cyntia released their album “Urban Night” in December 2016 via the VAA (Village Again Association) record label. The song “Bless of the Fire” features Aldious guitarist Toki!
On December 26, 2017, Cyntia announced that they were suspending all activities indefinitely due to Yui’s focal dystonia  (involuntary spasms from overuse or repetitive stress and tends to affect musicians and golfers). Although the guitarist planned to leave the band so someone new could take her place, the other members decided not to continue without her. So an event on January 13, 2018, was their last. Cyntia began an indefinite hiatus after January 2018. On October 26, 2018, YUI’s resumption of activities for focal dystonia was announced on the official website.

  • Rami らみ

At five years old, Rami started singing, sometime later, a chance invitation to a session with musicians would start her affection for heavy metal. Her first band was named Area.
Rami and guitarist Yoshi co-founded Aldious in Osaka, in June 2008. Rami named the band by shortening the phrase “Ultimate Melodious”. Rami penned all the lyrics during her time as frontwoman of Aldious.
Adious’ debut EP “Dear Slave” was released on November 2009, then in October 2010, their 1st album, “Deep Exceed”. The album topped Oricon’s independent music chart, while reaching #15 on the main chart. Their 2nd album, “Determination” released in October 2011 reached #13!
Unfortunately, this would be Rami’s last with them, it was announced that she was leaving the band due to health problems on June 29, 2012.
Aldious is the first band I saw on YouTube from Japan, and still my favorite, known as pioneers of the Girls Metal Band Boom that began in Japan in the 2010s.

In January 2015, Rami returned to making music as vocalist and lyricist of the heavy metal “project band” Raglaia (ラグライア, Raguraia).

This band was formed after Sads guitarist K-A-Z came across her demos in 2014. Raglaia”s name comes from the Greek goddess Aglaia, with Rami’s first initial added to the beginning. They released their debut single “Breaking Dawn” on April 8, 2015, and it reached the #20 position on the Oricon. It was supported by a short tour that began with their first concert on June 12. A second single titled “Promises” followed on August 12, it peaked at #38. Raglaia released their first album Creation on November 11, 2015, and it reached #22.

In 2016, Rami began a solo career releasing the album “Aspiration” on September 7,2016, and it reached #16 on Oricon. It features contributions from veteran metal musicians such as Syu, Yuhki, and Fumiya of Galneryus, Katsuji and Kentaro of Gargoyle, and Saber Tiger bassist Hibiki!

Rami’s live band for its tour included Cyntia members Yui and Azu, and TSP drummer Hina! Rami’s 2nd album, Reloaded, was released on January 31, 2018, and peaked at #31.

Rami released a digital download song “Requiem” in March 2020, under the name “Rami the Requiem”.

On the album “Meta-Loid” by Miyu, released in April 2020, Rami sang two songs! Miyu has supported Rami in her solo career as a live guitarist. The official 1st single by Rami the Requiem, “Serial Killer”, was released on July 15, 2020.Rami the Requiem’s 1st album, “Gyōan Dōkoku” was released June 23, 2021.

    RAMI solo vocalist

As we approach the fifth anniversary of this video, I thought it a great opportunity to share it here, in addition to the many times I’ve shared it in my FB groups!
Making a collaboration with the guitarist
SYU( GALNERYUS), has proven to be the recipe for success in rock and heavy metal for several top vocalists ! I’ve really enjoyed this music video, it was my first introduction to Rami as a solo artist.

I didn’t have to spend very long in the J-Metal genre to see that changes in band line-ups is almost on fast forward. Before I even finished my first viewing of “Spirit Black”(mv), I knew that Rami was long gone, on her own path.

In 2016 former Aldious vocalist RAMI released the full length video for “In My Eyes” from her first solo album “Aspiration”. This album came out on August 7 in two editions and contains eight tracks. The limited one includes the music video and the making of “In My Eyes” and also “Pray to the Sky”.

    LoVendoЯ!

My journey into Japanese music took an unexpected twist.
I began searching YouTube, dead set on finding every female exclusive or fronted Hard Rock/Metal band that I could from Japan.
When I came across Lovendor . I found their music really enjoyable. Admittedly due to the subject matter of songs such as “Fake” and “Coward”.
And the guitar work, Absolutely incredible !
One of their two lead singers in particular, was completely photogenic !
Tanaka Reina is captivating in those videos in such a way that you almost forget There’s a whole band there with her!
Following her career back in time, changed the course of my exploration completely.
In the past, I viewed pop music with a certain amount of disdain. Especially here in America. It’s often watered down and disappointing. And the particularly mellow stuff, I considerd a soundtrack for hell!
But J-pop caught me completely off guard so in that regard, I was more open minded to what was available as well as thoroughly overwhelmed by the amount of music and artists.
One of the fortunate benefits of Tanaka Reina’s career being with Hello!Project in particular is the vast amount of video archives.
Below she explains some of Lovendor’s backstory. As An A-list star of Morning Musume, and arguably my favorite one. It’s my intention to do a blog about her in particular as soon as I can !

Back when I began viewing the J metal genre, one of the first bands I discovered was Exist+Trace ! (MV)”Judea”, had me hooked! It predates the modern resurgence of women J-metal bands, and it’s Somewhat DIY video shooting style, make it fantastic!

This live performance, several years later, is a relentless in your face, Thrash metal jam ! I love it!

“VANGUARD” displays. A more stylized band, visually. While still. Playing incredible Hard Rock. !

Fast-paced hard driving Thrash metal, at its best!

The band experimented with some very creative Video Angles while Making this quite unique for a performance video. “TRUE”

“Halt” is another slideshow video, from 2007. When I started this blog, I intended to show how they progressed through the years, but instead, the YouTube algorithm is showing me considerably more content from when they began. Back in 06 and the early years!

This particular video is the live stream show from. June. Of 2021 ! Unfortunately it’s only a minute and a half long.

Fast forward a couple years to 2016. And the “Dream Rider” video comes out. Each band member’s character is very stylized and a more poppy sound that’s still very hard driving.

The official music video for Dream Rider. One of my favorites by Exist♱trace !

This is I believe to be their debut video!

    Fukumimi Ramen

I was wrapping up what was to be the last day on my trip to Las Vegas to start the website when I asked my web builder where they would like to go for lunch. They asked me if I had ever had actual Japanese ramen before. That’s when they simply insisted that I had to try Fukumimi Ramen.
Fukumimi Ramen is essentially a little hole in the wall. It’s one of those local “must try” hidden secrets. My Webmaster explained that whenever they had new people come in from out of town to visit this is one of the places they take their guests.

Being a vegetarian I was glad to see that they offered a few vegetarian options, and I went with the Tonkatsu Ramen Miso add spicy paste and edamame, and my counterpart ordered the Fukumimi ramen and Gyoza. It was really good! It was not what I expected exactly but then I wasn’t sure what to expect. The bowls are almost intimidatingly large, and at first you won’t think you can eat it all.

I’m going to make it a point to go back to Fukumimi Ramen. It’s so different from store-bought ramen. It’s a completely different thing. I’ll definitely be looking in my area for a Japanese ramen place.

    Fun Facts:
Fukumimi means “large ear lobes” in Japanese, and large ear lobes are a sign of fortune in Japan.

Before this adventure I had never had edamame and I had to be shown how to eat it.
